Tree felling had started earlier in 2018 with the Brickfields volunteer group bringing down the smaller trees and bushes that we were able to tackle. This removed about 20% of the total cover mainly at the top end of the pond by the water inflow point. Even this small amount made a great difference to the ponds ecology with an obvious increase in invertebrate life and bank side vegetation in that area during the next few months.
The main tree felling operations started in late July and took a week to accomplish. Once the dredging contractor arrived their long reach machines cleared the trees ready for an industrial sized tree chipper that literally ate the trees whole. Banking revetments and the dredging works could then begin.
